Goshen's name originated with some of the community's first settlers, who arrived in Ohio from Goshen, N.Y. Goshen was officially established in March of 1819, and formed from Miami Township. The first permanent settler was Jacob Myers.
By the mid 1800's Goshen boasted several saw and grist mills, blacksmiths, a tannery, hotel, pottery shop, churches, various shops, post office, schools, funeral home, hat factory, cabinet maker, brick yard, and more than one distillery, but the area around the village remained largely agricultural. The Cincinnati & Marietta Railroad passed through town with a station at Hills (Hills Station) and the Columbus & Wooster Turnpike (later renamed State Route 28) was the main thoroughfare.
